"De-coding Eating Disorder Urges and Understanding Their Purpose"

A common misperception is that eating disorders are about vanity; they are about self-preservation or survival. When a person's life circumstances become disturbing to the point that they lack the resources to cope or survive, they may develop an eating disorder. The eating disorder's purpose is to prevent conscious awareness of the disturbing circumstances in one's life. It works by translating the disturbing information into an eating disorder urge or thought which takes the person down a path where they are fully absorbed and feel a sense of control over what's happening in their life. In this way, the eating disorder has an adaptive function. The problem appears once the person is no longer living in the overwhelmingly disturbing circumstances. The eating disorder's once adaptive function is no longer needed or relevant, but it stays. In this presentation, Sherry will explain why it doesn't just "go away"; why a person can't "just eat"; and how to identify an eating disorder urge; identify the origin of its trigger; dialogue with the eating disorder; and assist the client in dealing with the trigger rather than acting on the urge.

Learning Objectives
In successfully completing and attending this presentation, participants will be able to:
  1. Identify the real trigger and origin of an eating disorder.
  2. Describe 3 eating disorder urges that clients experience in order to clarify what a real trigger in clients may look like.
  3. Name 3 functions an eating disorder can provide to the client.
  4. Identify 3 interventions used to help empower a client with an eating disorder.

Sherry Fleming, LMFT is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has been helping people heal from eating disorders since 2000. She felt a calling to help others after recovering from anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa since she understands the depth of the struggle. Beginning her career at Monte Nido Residential Treatment Center, she eventually became Assistant Clinical Director. Later, she continued her work as Clinical Director at the Eating Disorder Center of California. Sherry was integral in developing the program and opening Reconnect's residential trauma treatment center and was their first Clinical Director. Her work as an ongoing consultant has included assisting Butterfly Foundation in Sidney, Australia, with the creation of their IOP and is currently doing the same for their RTC program for eating disorders. She has a private practice in Woodland Hills and is fully trained in EMDR (Levels I and II), Brainspotting (Levels I and II) and CRM (Comprehensive Resource Model). Sherry has spoken on a variety of topics, including dissociation caused by trauma and its expression in eating disorders; tips for getting treatment authorizations from insurance companies; using CRM when working with DID; and decoding the message behind an eating disorder urge.
